Fill in the blanks

Introduction

The Fill in the blanks task in the PTE listening section is a task that tests your ability to listen to a recording of 30 to 60 seconds, identify the missing words and fill in the blanks with those words.

There are  2 to 3 fill in the blank tasks in the exam.

Critical stuff

  • Utilize the initial 7 seconds to skim through the text on the screen and place the cursor in the first blank.
  • Actively listen to the recording and follow the text on the screen together.
  • Type the words directly in the blanks and move the cursor to the next blank.
  • Do not correct mistakes while the recording is playing.
  • Once the recording finishes check your responses and correct the spellings.
  • Click next once finished.

The Sequence of steps for the fill in the blanks task in the PTE listening section

  1. A timer counts down 7 seconds.
  2. Use this time to quickly read through the text on the screen and place the cursor in the first blank.
  3. An audio recording plays from 30 to 60 seconds.
  4. listen to the recording and follow the text on the screen till the first blank.
  5. Type the word from the recording into the blank quickly and place the cursor into the next blank.
  6. Quickly get back to following the text onscreen. If you miss this you will miss the word for the next blank.
  7. The actions of listening, following the text, typing the word, and placing the cursor in the next blank have to be followed in the mentioned sequence.
  8. While the recording plays do not attempt to correct any typing mistakes else you will miss listening to the words for the remaining blanks.
  9. Once the recording stops, check and correct each word you typed for any spelling or grammatical mistakes.
  10. Click next once finished as the timer for the listening part will keep on running and spending too much time on one task will impact the time available for the remaining tasks.
