Reading & writing: Fill in the blanks

Introduction

PTE Reading & writing: fill in the blanks is a task that tests your ability to read a given text, understand it and be able to fill in the blanks with the correct options. These tasks access both reading and writing skills.

There are up to 6 blanks in every task and 5  answer choices to fill these blanks.

There are a total of 5 to 6 such tasks in the exam.

Please memorize the mind map given at the top, these activities need to be followed in the mentioned sequence. It is essential for success.

Critical stuff

  • Skim through the text and understand the meaning of the text.
  • Do not spend too much time on one task as individual tasks are not timed you will end up with little or no time for later reading tasks.

The Sequence of steps for the PTE Reading & writing: fill in the blanks

Reading: fill in the blanks task has the following sequence of events:-

  1. Skim through the text provided and understand the meaning.
  2. Fill in the blanks by selecting the right option from the drop-down using the following techniques:-
    • Phrases – Phrases are words that are used together. the blank could be one part of a phrase. try to focus on words before and after the blanks for clues to complete the phrase and the blank.
    • Grammar – Look for grammatical clues to fill in the blanks. The right word would fit grammatically in the blank.
    • Pronouns – pronouns are the words that are used in place of nouns e.g. he, she, it, we, they, I, etc. Be aware of the pronouns and choose the words from the answer options that fit right with them.
  3. Since the answer choices are more than the blanks some words will be left after filling the blanks.
  4. Check your responses to ensure they make sense and are grammatically correct.
  5. Change your response if not appropriate.
  6. Click next once finished as the timer keeps running for the reading part.
