The IELTS Listening test is common for IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training tests. The duration of the test is 30 minutes. There are 40 questions in total and you get 1 mark for each correct answer.
Listening Tasks / Questions
The IELTS Listening test has a variety of question types and you can get any 4 question types/ tasks from the ones mentioned below
Multiple choice
In this question type, you will be asked to choose one correct answer from three answer options, or you may be asked to choose more than one correct option from the given options based on the audio that you hear. Read the question carefully to confirm whether you must choose one correct option or more.
Short-answer questions
In this question type, you will need to listen to a recording of a conversation between two people and match the correct options from the recording to the ones given in the question.
Sentence completion
In the sentence completion task, you must fill in the gap in the sentence given in the question by using the information you hear on the recording. Ensure to read the question carefully and respect the word limit or you will lose a mark.
Matching
In the Matching question type, you will need to listen to a recording and match the options from the recording to the options given in the question.
Plan/map/diagram Labelling
In this task, you will have to label any of the following visuals
- A diagram (e.g. a piece of equipment)
- A set of pictures
- A plan (e.g. of a building)
- A map (e.g. of a town)
You will have to listen to the recording carefully and choose the correct answer options from the ones given with the question. Take care of the following points
- Don’t change the words from the recording.
- Read the question carefully and respect the word limit or you will lose a mark.
- Any hyphenated words count as a single word e.g. break-in
Form/note/table/flow chart/summary completion
In this type of question, you must listen to a recording, use the facts/ideas from it and select the correct options from the question to complete any of the following.
- A form
- A set of notes
- A table
- A flow chart
Ensure you read the question carefully and respect the word limit or you will lose a mark.
