Multiple choice, choose single answer (PTE) is a task that tests your ability to read a given text, understand it and be able to select the right answer from the given options.

There are 1 to 2 such tasks in the exam.

Critical stuff

  • Read and understand the text and the question.
  • Do not spend too much time on one task as individual tasks are not timed you will end up with little or no time for later reading tasks.
  • Do not choose an answer just because it has a word that matches the text as the meaning and context of that response might not be correct. That is why it is important to understand the question, text and response options.

The Sequence of steps for the multiple choice, choose single answer task (PTE)

Multiple choice, choose single answer task has the following sequence of events:-

  1. Read and understand the question.
  2. Skim through the response options.
  3. Read the text carefully and ascertain the topic of the text and the supporting points.
  4. Don’t get stuck, if you do not understand any word try to guess its meaning from the meaning of the entire sentence or its neighbouring words.
  5. Now you should head back to the response options and read them carefully.
  6. Sometimes amongst the answer options, there is an option that has a word from the text. It may seem that this is the right option. But normally it is the incorrect option as the meaning and the context is different. That is why it is important to read the options carefully and understand them before answering.
  7. Eliminate the ones that seem incorrect.
  8. From amongst the remaining choices select the one that seems like the most appropriate answer to the question.
  9. Re-check the answer one last time.
  10. Click next once finished.
