Introduction

The Re-order paragraph (PTE) is a task that tests your ability to read the text present in different boxes, understand their meaning and sequence the boxes in the correct order, where only one order of the boxes is correct.

There are a total of 2 to 3 such tasks in the exam.

Please memorize the mind map given at the top, these activities need to be followed in the mentioned sequence. It is essential for success.

Critical stuff

  • Read and understand the meaning of the text in each box.
  • Do not spend too much time on one task as individual tasks are not timed, and you will have little or no time for later reading tasks.

The Sequence of steps for the re-order paragraph (PTE) task

Re-order paragraph task has the following sequence of events:-

  1. Read the text in all the text boxes carefully.
  2. Identify the topic – This is important as you will have a starting point in this task. To identify the topic keep the following points in mind.
    • The topic sentence will always be a general statement about the main idea of the text.
    • It will not contain pronouns e.g. he, she, it, They, who, etc.
    • The topic sentence will never refer to another sentence.
  3. Shift the topic sentence to the right panel named target.
  4. Identify the idea being conveyed in the topic sentence as the next sentence will carry forward the same idea. Once you identify the idea of the topic sentence you need to find the sentence that builds up this idea further. Use the following techniques:-
    • Chronology– you might not get dates but try to use the sequence of events mentioned in the sentences.
    • Pronouns– Proper nouns or common nouns may be replaced with pronouns in the sentences that follow.
    • Transition words– The sentences might be connected with words like and, but, so, because, etc.
  5. Re-order the remaining sentences using the techniques outlined above.
  6. Check the order of the sentences once finished and ensure the text in different boxes makes sense.
  7. Click next once finished.
